Flying machine designs generally use only a few pistons and don't create lag except when harvesting. Now you can make them in vanilla thanks to slime blocks!These designs are my own and are the fasted and most compact that I have seen yet.

This will cause a block update which will start your machine and your off!A couple of things to watch while you are using the machine:Stopping the machine is done by placing a Redstone block on any of the pistons locking it on or running into a stop or other non-movable or large object.Yay! This can be solved by placing the player in a vehicle such as a minecart or by standing on top of a honey block. Watch the video or follow the step by step photos and you should be able to make a functioning machine.Make sure you build the machine facing the way you want to fly and at the correct altitude so you are not gonna run into the first tree you see.The non-movable block (obsidian or similar) used in construction is to stop the machine running away when you are building it. Combine them both together and you get flying machines exploding all over the place. Some engines can move diagonally by moving alternately along 2 axes .Slime block "knightships" (displacement (2m,m)) and "camelships" (displacement (3m,m)) can also be constructed, and further Engine A is a high-speed single-direction engine.

I can assure you it does in Minecraft version 1.8 or above if built and used correctly. This design is multi-directional but it does require a return station to change the direction.
